New Daiwa Procyon AL Spinning Reel Review in 2024

The Daiwa Procyon AL is rich in its feature set. In terms of application, the Procyon AL is available in five sizes, from the Daiwa Procyon AL PCNAL2000D model for freshwater fish to the Daiwa Procyon AL PCNAL4000D-C, which fits the bill nicely for inshore applications and larger freshwater fish.

Lightweight aluminum body

First, the reel series features an aluminum body that allows less body and frame flex providing better support on the gears and bearings, allowing increased torque and power while also allowing longer life to the gears. Anglers will find that the aluminum body of the Daiwa Procyon AL is incredibly lightweight when they pick it up and put it on their favorite rod.

Advanced Air rotor design

The Daiwa Procyon AL also features an air rotor engineered to be super rigid, especially at high drag pressures with little flex. The Daiwa Procyon AL also has generous cut-outs in its engineering design, which reduces the weight of the rotor. The new reels also showcase a tubular air bail that reduces weight and offers more rigidity than standard wire, so you get less flex and bending or breaking. The tubular air bail is also manufactured with thicker material that feels good on the fingers when flipping the bail by hand.

DIGI-GEAR technology ensures smooth drag operation

Another element of the series is DIGIGEAR technology, digitally cut to reduce weight, and considerably better gear meshing increases smoothness and gear wear.
Anglers will also find Daiwa’s distinctive Advanced Tournament Drag (ATD) a benefit for setting the hook and fighting fish in inshore and freshwater fishing. When you set the hook, the reel instantly adds drag resistance, and then as the fish starts pulling drag, the ATD drag curve automatically returns to your prescribed setting.

Daiwa’s first generation of digitally engineered gear design ensures a perfect mesh between the ultra-tough stainless-steel drive gear and pinion gears for optimized speed, power, durability, and smoothness.

The new Daiwa Procyon AL family features a Long Cast ABS spool as well. The design of the spool’s lip allows the braided line to exit the reel at a much tighter cone-shaped angle, meeting the guide train with less resistance and force, alleviating wind knots, and allowing for longer casts.

Comfortable Handle

The new Daiwa Procyon AL features a machined screw-in handle that connects directly to the main drive gear and a rubber handle knob for a solid grip. For freshwater and inshore anglers looking for their next spinning reel, look no further than the Daiwa Procyon AL, a reel engineered and manufactured with the needs of today’s angler in mind.

Improved ATD DRAG

Daiwa’s Automatic Tournament Drag uses an improved drag grease that exhibits a low viscosity at rest yet becomes more viscous immediately after drag starts up. This reduces initial drag start-up inertia and, combined with the structural changes of the ATD Drag System, results in a smoother drag from the initial hook up.
Drag durability is more than 10 times that of 15 Daiwa Saltiga. In comparison to 15 Daiwa Saltiga drag washers, it is more than 10 times more durable with significantly increased drag longevity. Adding drag washers means the workload is spread evenly across the drag stack. By designing the drag with smaller washers, the maximum pressure per washer is decreased, but by adding more washers, increased pressure is created.

AIR-BAIL

Daiwa’s innovative bail design features a hollow tubular stainless steel bail that delivers maximum rigidity and strength with minimum weight. Featuring a smooth protrusion-free design and construction, line slides unencumbered along the Air Bail towards the line roller for trouble-free line control.

ABS-LONGCAST

Compared to conventional spools, the LC-ABS has been shown to increase the average flight distance by approx. 5% due to its reduced weight and modified shape. Lightweight and incredibly strong, aluminum allows strength and weightlessness to be achieved without the cost and corrosion issues of other metals.

Real Experience With Daiwa Procyon AL New Spinning Reel

The new Daiwa Procyon AL, we consider this reel kind of a crossover reel, so with a freshwater slash inshore saltwater reel, this is the new Daiwa Procyon AL, and AL on the backside of it means aluminum. Now you can check my user experience below the Daiwa Procyon AL review article.

Really Lighter: It actually has that aluminum frame to it. What that’s going to do is give you a lot of strength to durability. You’re not going to have any stem flex, but that aluminum actually keeps all the gears and precise alignment.

Super Smooth: It’s got a direct drive system with air bail and air rotor, and this is the new Daiwa Procyon AL. Inside this reel, we have a direct drive system to one of our Daiwa Digi-gears, which is a digital cut and polished gear system that gives you the nice smooth rotation of the handle.

Different sizes for different anglers: You can’t feel the gears touch, plus the better that you can cut the gears, the longer the gear is last, the better that they feel. Over and above that, we actually have our Air Bail system on this, but the Daiwa Procyon AL reel actually has the ability being in 2000, 2500, 3000, and 4000 sizes to be used both in fresh and saltwater.

Conclusion: My New Favorite!

I own a 4000-size Daiwa Procyon AL, and I’m incredibly satisfied with this reel. By far my favorite in my lineup. It’s my go-to Salmon/Steelhead reel in the Pacific Northwest. All Daiwa reels you can use in both fresh and saltwater, but the strength of the durability of the lightweight aluminum frame really sets it in the direction of both fresh and saltwater, but it’s a great reel. Great look to it, you know, kind of polished silver with few red accents. Daiwa really killed it with this one.
